New Lake Picachos in Mexico for Big Bass

September 23, 2014 Leave a comment

If you’re a fan of bass fishing, and in particular of international bass fishing excursions to the best locations in the world, by now you’ve probably heard of Mexico’s Lake Picachos. If you’ve ever dreamed about fishing the “Old Mexico” where the bass were uneducated, ridiculously plentiful and growing at warp speed, now is the time to book your trip. The lake, less than an hour from Mazatlan, is five years old and it’s already pumping out double-digit monsters that are as wide as they are long. It recently opened for fishing and the tight regulations should maintain it as a fish factory for years to come. We can’t guarantee that it will remain as good as El Salto for as long, but right now it is on the verge of being something special, and we want to introduce it to you

Date: March 14th, 2014
Name: Lake Baccarac
Hottest Baits: Topwater, Flukes, Senkos and Scroungers
Hottest Colors: Pearl, Watermelon, Fire tiger
Comments: Chester Graham group had another fabulous trip – with every boat the first day catching around fifty fish; unfortunately most of them were small. Day two, fishing close to the bank, they started seeing a lot bigger fish and by day three, 90% of the bass were females being caught one to two feet from the bank in less than two feet of water and boats were catching between 80 and 100 fish a day. Chester once again won the big bass pot and also had 25 fish over 6 lbs. Big Senkos, swimming flukes and very light scroungers were the ticket.

Lake El Salto Fishing Report – Feb. 27, 2013

El Salto Report:
Please pay attention to our tackle requirements as they are very accurate as to the baits that work at El Salto. Trust in the baits we recommend and trust your guide as he is on the water daily. The fishing at El Salto has continued its run on quality fish. You will note that the numbers are down slightly but the number of quality bass is up with bass up to 9.2 pounds. Sam Billmeyer had his best day (6th trip) when he personally caught & released 7 fish over 7 pounds with 10 additional fish between 5 and 7 pounds. Right now, soft plastics seem to be the hot baits. It has been the 10” Berkley Power Worm (Black with Blue tail and Watermelon), Senkos and 8” Zoom Lizards (Watermelon with Black or Red flakes). In addition, both the Storm and Money Minnow have delivered quality fish. Another, go-to bait has been the Silver with Blue Black Rat L Trap.

I would like to tell you a little about the lake. All lakes in Mexico are primarily about irrigation and in some cases, power. This is why the lake gets lower throughout the season. We are fortunate, in that, we historically fill up during the raining season. Why has El Salto been such a big bass haven since its inception? We get good rain and the replenishing nutrients from the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains flows downhill to our Florida Stain Bass but the most important thing is the Tilapia. Their netting is essential for our Fat, Healthy Bass! Tilapia is the largest food source for our bass and if not removed in an organized fashion, they would take over the lake. They multiply like crazy and terrorize the spawning bass. Once they grow to a certain size they cannot be eaten by 8, 9 and 10+ pound bass. Daily we see a large bass floating dead that took on more than it could handle. You will see that the bass takes the Tilapia head first and because of the unusual dorsal fin on the Tilapia they get stuck in the greedy bass’ throat. The result is dead bass and if released, a living Tilapia!

The nets are our friend! It is organized, it is regulated, and it creates income for the commercial fishermen and their families. The process is essential for both the commercial and sport fishing to survive. And survive it has! El Salto as a lake and Anglers Inn as a fishing resort has been the undisputed lake and outfitter in the world for trophy Florida-strain Largemouth Bass for 15 years. Sure the nets are not esthetic and for some of you difficult to fish around. But the truth is that if you fish the nets correctly you will do well and have a great experience! Don’t worry if you cannot get some unpredictable and often changed dates to avoid the nets. Come anyway! In the big picture, it does not matter! To prove this, in the near future, I am going to do a video for you fishing the nets!

Last year at El Salto we had a wonderful season and this season the action has continued. If you have a way to go, don’t miss out in the skinny lake and plentiful big bass bonanza from May 1 – July 31. No nets, skinny water and 100% of the bass!
Jose Lozano from Chicago fished Lake El Salto for a day and was very excited about his trip. He reported catching over 50 fish with the biggest being 8 pounds caught on a senko. “Best fishing ever! Best staff! Can’t wait ‘till next year. Thank you!”

We are fortunate to have good fishing all season long and we have many anglers who come down 3 or 4 times a year to enjoy the weather, change in fishing tactics. My personal favorite is the fall. We have a full lake, everything around the lake is green, the fish have had a couple of months off, the weather is fantastic and it is the top-water fishing at its best.

Comments: 02/08/2013 Ever since Gil and his group arrived the bite has been extremely slow..Russ Johnson is picking up topwater bass every morning…Trent Loukas and Judd Hightower have landed several nice trophy bass. The bite has been very slow the last 2 days. Manuel Salazar predicting the better bite starts in March this year which will be exactly when the better bite started last year.
02/09/2013 An overview of the last few days of bass fishing on Baccarac: The Trent Loukas / Andrus Brothers trip is over and they flew back to Amarillo in their jet. Although the bite was very challenging, all members of the group ended up catching largemouth over 10 lbs. and Trent stated that he caught countless fish over 9 pounds. A couple of guys in the group broke their personal best, with Chris Scharbauer catching a 10.2 pound bass. Every day, their big fish pot required at least a 10 lber to be in the money. The Gil Wright group, currently at the lodge, is having the same challenging conditions, with Gil currently not catching anything worth noting but Bob Schreiwer fishing with Sixto catching a 10.8, 9.15 and a 9.0 for his three biggest largemouth bass so far. The best producing guide over the last ten days has been El Tigre. He has been dialed to the spots that are holding the best numbers and the best quality of fish, with some of his clients catching 50 and 60 bass in a session.
02/10/2013 After two very slow days the big bass along with numbers came back today with guide Alanzo fishing Wes Moffat caught a 11.0. 12.4, 11.5 all on topwater baits. Sixto fishing with Jerry Ballard and Bob Schriver caught a 10.6 on topwater. Manuel Salazar fishing with Gil Wright and Denis caught a total of 38 fish with a 9.8, 8.6 and 8.3 on topwater bass lures.

Trophy Bass on Lake El Salto

Anglers Inn  Bass Fishing Report – January, 2013

Most bass anglers report that the numbers are down slightly but the quality bass from 5 – 9 pounds is up. This season has all about quality bass and that is great for everyone. The best baits have been top-water including Zara Spooks to Chug Bugs and Flukes to Pop R’s, Senkos, Lizards and Rat L Traps. As always the colors are “match the hatch”. When you interview all the anglers at the lake at any given time you will find that different anglers are catching fish on the full spectrum of our recommended baits and colors found at Anglers Inn. There are the easy baits like the Berkley Power Worms, Lizards and Senkos to the work baits like Spooks and Cranks. Trust your guide, as he has the on the lake, day-to-day time and experience.

David Knoff visited Anglers Inn on a daytrip while he was vacationing in Mazatlan and he caught over 30 fish with the biggest one being an 8-pound bass. The most productive bait was a watermelon red fleck 8” lizard. “Top notch outfit and service. Thank you so much. I have to come back for a week next time!”

Father & son team Tim & Toby Semler caught over 120 fish during their 3-day stay at Anglers Inn. The biggest fish they caught was an 8 lbs. 4 oz. bass on a watermelon red fleck lizard. “Great service! Great staff! Cannot ask for any better”!

Ron Turalisnki and his son Adam reported catching 20 bass over 7 pounds! Their biggest fish weighted at 9 pounds 12 oz. The most productive baits during their stay were 5” senkos; Rat-L-Traps silver with black and blue back, 8” watermelon lizards.

Jose Lozano from Chicago fished Lake El Salto for a day and was very excited about his trip. He reported catching over 50 fish with the biggest being 8 pounds caught on a senko. “Best fishing ever! Best staff! Can’t wait ‘till next year. Thank you!”

William Shell, first-time visitor to Anglers Inn came down with his son and caught over 200 fish during their stay with the largest fish being 7.3 lbs. The most productive baits were senkos, white super flukes and spinner baits. “Great trip for myself and Robbie, my 12-year old son. He caught the biggest fish!”

The good news is the lake is falling at a normal rate and the boats are still operating from in front of the resort. More good news is the discount air travel provided by Cal Jet from selected cities around the US. You can find the information and schedules at http://www.caljetair.com

Our couples have been enjoying our packages that contain extra days at the beautiful Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay. If you have time in your schedule, a couple days of fun-in-the-sun at http://www.pueblobonitoemeraldbay.com and some time in Mazatlan is a great option. It is a great city with lots to do. Many have planned return family trips at Pueblo Bonito with the fishermen doing El Salto and rest enjoying the hotel, beach and city. The nice thing about this type of family vacation is that the fishermen rejoin their families for a little beach time. This is a good plan, in that, it provides something wonderful for everyone!

Bass Fishing Update from Lake Baccarac Lodge

Trophy Mexican Bass

Date: August 29th, 2012
Name: Lake Baccarac Lodge
Hottest Baits: spinnerbaits and crankbaits
Hottest Colors: spinnerbaits, crankbaits
Date Fished: August, 2012
Comments: 08/29/2012 We arrived last Thursday, the 23rd of August, at the lodge. The 23rd produced unbelievable topwater action, with no rains but heavy, heavy cloud cover and enough humidity to choke you. We caught somewhere in the neighborhood of nine to twelve fish over 10lbs. on topwater. Huge rains arrived that afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday, the 25th and 26th, Lake Baccarac rose over ten feet although they caught a few bass, they were mostly small ones and the fish has scattered. By Monday, they located largemouth in Papachaw and caught most of our fish in deep water with 8 inch plum and purple worms. The lake is in great shape, currently standing about 60% capacity with plenty of rains coming. looking for 4 people out of Amarillo any time the first 2 week of October –private flight flying direct
08/21/2012 Eddie Bezler reports: We had a great morning bass fishing bite followed by a very slow afternoon bite all three days. Ten to eleven foot diving bomber crankbaits would produce fish whereas the deep diving crankbaits were too big for their liking on this trip. Topwater was always good early morning but not like I’ve had in trips past. We fished a lot with the Zipper worms and had moderate success. The rains in the afternoon were much needed for the fishermen but the largemouth bass did not seem to care much for biting after the rains. All four bass anglers in our group did catch a fish over 10 lbs. and we all caught four or five fish over 9 lbs. There were plenty of 6 to 7 lbers caught. I would guess we all caught fifty fish apiece in that range. This is the second time we have flown our plane into Mexico – still nothing there to give any heartburn and will do it again.
