New Lake Picachos in Mexico for Big Bass
If you’re a fan of bass fishing, and in particular of international bass fishing excursions to the best locations in the world, by now you’ve probably heard of Mexico’s Lake Picachos. If you’ve ever dreamed about fishing the “Old Mexico” where the bass were uneducated, ridiculously plentiful and growing at warp speed, now is the time to book your trip. The lake, less than an hour from Mazatlan, is five years old and it’s already pumping out double-digit monsters that are as wide as they are long. It recently opened for fishing and the tight regulations should maintain it as a fish factory for years to come. We can’t guarantee that it will remain as good as El Salto for as long, but right now it is on the verge of being something special, and we want to introduce it to you

Lake El Salto Fishing Report – Feb. 27, 2013
El Salto Report:
Please pay attention to our tackle requirements as they are very accurate as to the baits that work at El Salto. Trust in the baits we recommend and trust your guide as he is on the water daily. The fishing at El Salto has continued its run on quality fish. You will note that the numbers are down slightly but the number of quality bass is up with bass up to 9.2 pounds. Sam Billmeyer had his best day (6th trip) when he personally caught & released 7 fish over 7 pounds with 10 additional fish between 5 and 7 pounds. Right now, soft plastics seem to be the hot baits. It has been the 10” Berkley Power Worm (Black with Blue tail and Watermelon), Senkos and 8” Zoom Lizards (Watermelon with Black or Red flakes). In addition, both the Storm and Money Minnow have delivered quality fish. Another, go-to bait has been the Silver with Blue Black Rat L Trap.
I would like to tell you a little about the lake. All lakes in Mexico are primarily about irrigation and in some cases, power. This is why the lake gets lower throughout the season. We are fortunate, in that, we historically fill up during the raining season. Why has El Salto been such a big bass haven since its inception? We get good rain and the replenishing nutrients from the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains flows downhill to our Florida Stain Bass but the most important thing is the Tilapia. Their netting is essential for our Fat, Healthy Bass! Tilapia is the largest food source for our bass and if not removed in an organized fashion, they would take over the lake. They multiply like crazy and terrorize the spawning bass. Once they grow to a certain size they cannot be eaten by 8, 9 and 10+ pound bass. Daily we see a large bass floating dead that took on more than it could handle. You will see that the bass takes the Tilapia head first and because of the unusual dorsal fin on the Tilapia they get stuck in the greedy bass’ throat. The result is dead bass and if released, a living Tilapia!
The nets are our friend! It is organized, it is regulated, and it creates income for the commercial fishermen and their families. The process is essential for both the commercial and sport fishing to survive. And survive it has! El Salto as a lake and Anglers Inn as a fishing resort has been the undisputed lake and outfitter in the world for trophy Florida-strain Largemouth Bass for 15 years. Sure the nets are not esthetic and for some of you difficult to fish around. But the truth is that if you fish the nets correctly you will do well and have a great experience! Don’t worry if you cannot get some unpredictable and often changed dates to avoid the nets. Come anyway! In the big picture, it does not matter! To prove this, in the near future, I am going to do a video for you fishing the nets!
Last year at El Salto we had a wonderful season and this season the action has continued. If you have a way to go, don’t miss out in the skinny lake and plentiful big bass bonanza from May 1 – July 31. No nets, skinny water and 100% of the bass!
Jose Lozano from Chicago fished Lake El Salto for a day and was very excited about his trip. He reported catching over 50 fish with the biggest being 8 pounds caught on a senko. “Best fishing ever! Best staff! Can’t wait ‘till next year. Thank you!”
We are fortunate to have good fishing all season long and we have many anglers who come down 3 or 4 times a year to enjoy the weather, change in fishing tactics. My personal favorite is the fall. We have a full lake, everything around the lake is green, the fish have had a couple of months off, the weather is fantastic and it is the top-water fishing at its best.

The good news is the lake is falling at a normal rate and the boats are still operating from in front of the resort. More good news is the discount air travel provided by Cal Jet from selected cities around the US. You can find the information and schedules at http://www.caljetair.com
Our couples have been enjoying our packages that contain extra days at the beautiful Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay. If you have time in your schedule, a couple days of fun-in-the-sun at http://www.pueblobonitoemeraldbay.com and some time in Mazatlan is a great option. It is a great city with lots to do. Many have planned return family trips at Pueblo Bonito with the fishermen doing El Salto and rest enjoying the hotel, beach and city. The nice thing about this type of family vacation is that the fishermen rejoin their families for a little beach time. This is a good plan, in that, it provides something wonderful for everyone!
